1. onlinedictionary,
2. Emoji
你一定知道国外有一系列的“How to”书籍,比如<How to draw>, <How to render>, <How to be alone>,甚至川普在成为美国总统之前都出了本书叫做<How to get rich>,对,我知道这很川普。
Part1 Learning new words1. Read voraciously 如饥似渴地阅读
You might try reading one new book a week, or reading the newspaper every morning. Pick a frequency and pace that works for you, and develop a reading routine that fits into your schedule. 可以尝试每周阅读一本新书或者每天早上看报纸 ,选择适合自己的阅读节奏并坚持下去
2. Read high literature 阅读高阶文学作品
Read classics. Read poetry. Read Herman Melville, William Faulkner, and Virginia Woolf.阅读经典。阅读诗歌。去看赫尔曼,福克纳,伍尔芙的作品。
3. Read online sources and "lowbrow" stuff, too. 看网上的和所谓低俗的东西
Read online magazines, essays, and blogs on a variety of subjects.看一些网上不同主题的的杂志啊,文章啊,博客之类的,(推荐国外知乎“Quora” )
4. Look up any words you don't recognize.不认识的单词要查词典
When you see an unfamiliar word, do not skip over it impatiently. Try to puzzle out its possible meaning in the context of the sentence, then look it up in the dictionary and confirm its definition.看到不认识的单词不要匆忙跳过,先根据上下文语境推测单词含义,再查词典确认其意义。(不用我说你们也知道知米背单词可以查词吧,记得添加到生词本噢~)
5. Read the thesaurus. 看词典
Look up words you use a lot so you can learn similar words, and use those words as well.对于自己使用较多的单词可以查下他们的类似词(包括形近词和近义词),多多使用。
Part 2 Using new words1. Set a goal 设定一个目标
Try to learn three new words a week and work them into your speech and writing. If you can't use a word effectively and accurately in a sentence, it's not a part of your vocabulary.每个星期尝试学习三个新单词并将之用在演讲和作文里(当然,对于备考族来说这个量是远远不够的)。如果你没法儿有效准确把单词用在句子里,那不好意思你还没有完全拥有这个单词!
2. Use flashcards or post-it notes around your house 在家里贴上单词卡或者便利贴
Try some simple memorization techniques as if you were studying for a test. Hang post-its with the definition of a particular word you hope to memorize above the coffee maker, so you can study it while fixing your morning cup. 用考试的心态去记单词,可以尝试一些辅助记忆的方法。把你要记的单词的含义写在便利贴上,贴在家里的镜子旁,餐桌上(毕竟我们不是人手一个咖啡机,所以我改掉啦)
3.Write more. 大量输出
Start journaling if you don't already, or start a blog. Actively flexing your writing muscles will keep your vocabulary strong. Write letters to old friends and use lots of specific details. 开个博客吧,来训练你的书写肌肉(还有这种操作),这会让词汇记忆更牢靠。给老朋友写信,多一些具体的细节(比如对心情,事件,景物等的描述)。
4. Use accurate adjectives and precise nouns. 准确使用形容词和名词
Don't use three words when one will do. For instance, the phrase "dolphins and whales" can be replaced with the word "cetaceans," making "cetaceans" a useful word. 能用一个单词表达清楚就别用多个。比如海豚和鲸都是鲸目类动物,记住cetaceans这个有用的名词就可以了。
A word is also useful if it is more descriptive than the word or phrase it replaces. For example, many people's voices could be described as "pleasant". But someone with a very pleasant voice could be said to have a "mellifluous" voice.另外就是描述性的单词(多指形容词),比如形容声音甜美悦耳,mellifluous就比pleasant更好。
5. Don't flaunt it.别炫技
Inexperienced writers think using the Thesaurus function in Microsoft Word twice in every sentence makes writing better. It doesn't. Using flashy vocabulary and "spelling bee" words makes your writing pompous. What's worse, though, is that it also makes writing less accurate than more common words. Using the appropriate word is the mark of a real writer and a sure sign of advanced vocabulary.写作新手觉得在一句话里多用几个同义替换词比较高级,但实际上反而会让文章华而不实,更甚者,会让文章表达不准确。准确用词才是写作者的正确打开方式。
Part 3 Building Vocabulary 积累词汇1. Do word puzzles and play word games. 玩字谜游戏
Word puzzles are an excellent source of increasing your word knowledge because the puzzle creators will often need to resort to an array of unusual words to ensure that the words fit into their puzzles and that they are interesting for the puzzle doer. 字谜游戏可以帮助积累词汇是因为创作者为了给出合适的谜底需要使用大量的非常规词汇并且它们得能吸引游戏者。
2. Learn a little Latin.学一点儿拉丁语
Knowing a bit of Latin is an excellent way to learn the roots of many words in the English language and can help you figure out the meaning of a wide range of words that you don't yet know without having to resort to the dictionary.
There are hundreds and thousands of writers in the world and they write in all genres, forms and categories of language, but some books stand out from the milieu, either because of the story or the style of the author. Good writing fully engages the reader and carries him into the story and circumstances. News reports or informative pieces may not need much of embellishment as the matter or story covered needs to be presented in a crisp and straightforward way. However, if it is a creative writing piece, and especially when it comes to fiction, the writer has to absorb the reader into the pages of the book and make him feel one with the characters or situations. To do this, he has at his disposal numerous literary devices to spice up his work and make it gripping, interesting and very believable.A literary device is a language aid used by a writer to add spice, drama and excitement to his writing and to suck the reader into the imaginary world or circumstance he has created through his writing. There are hundreds of such literary devices available and the author can choose freely depending on his writing style and genre. Some common literary devices used are Similes, Metaphors, Allegory, personification, Oxymoron etc. Let us look at two not often talked about, but nevertheless, important literary devices in detail: Motif and Theme.A motif is a recurring pattern in a writing work that helps to strengthen the main theme. It can be concrete or symbolic and keeps showing up reinforcing the ideas or underlying theme. A motif can be a subject, an idea, an image or event that the writer introduces at regular intervals to highlight certain events or ideas. In layman’s terms we may say that motifs are noticeably repeated hints pointing towards what is coming in the story. Prince Charming, beautiful maidens, wicked step mothers, happy endings – all these are examples of motifs in fairy tales.Every written piece has a purpose. The writer wants to convey something to the reader – an idea, a thought process or a concept. He does this through his theme. The theme is not the story line, nor is it a chronology of events; it is much broader than that. A story may have one or more themes that the writer wants to convey to his reader and connect with them. Themes can be death, love, loneliness, friendship, honor, emancipation of women etc.As both Motif and Theme are very similar and closely related, one finds it difficult to distinguish between them easily. Here are a few pointers to make it easy to understand:If the writer takes revenge as his theme, he will highlight it by using related motifs, like crime being committed, someone being wronged, person going through agony, protagonist planning revenge – all pointers to the main theme of the writing. In conclusion, one can liken the theme of a piece of writing to a beautiful fabric. The color and appearance of the fabric is decided by the theme. The motifs are like designs interspersed all along the fabric keeping in tune with the main theme. For example, if the theme of the fabric is Mexican ethnic, the motifs will be of related patterns like the sun, Aztec symbols, boleros etc. They are not the same, but one helps in accentuating the other.5. look?
"Look it up" 是一个英语短语,意思是查找或查询某个信息。它常用于向别人提供一个建议或指示,让他们去查找相关的信息。这个短语通常用于讨论时,当提到一个主题或问题,但没有详细的知识或信息时,可以建议别人去查找相关的资料或信息来获取更多的了解。
例如:
A: "Do you know when the new movie is coming out?"
B: "I'm not sure, but you can look it up on the movie's official website."
A: "How many countries are there in the world?"
B: "I'm not sure about the exact number, but you can look it up in an encyclopedia or online."
"Look it up" 的用法表示一种主动的行为,鼓励人们去主动获取信息,而不是依赖他人提供答案。
6. 推荐几个适合高中生学习的学习网站?
还是要看你学什么,你有可能想学文化知识,也有可能是技能或者兴趣,列几个你选择好了。
1.易学啦 http://www.yixuela.com
上面有很多视频,并且都是按章节整理的,内容比较全面。
2.edX (哈佛大学和MIT合作的网站)
3.编程:JavaScript(非常有趣互动性强,适合初学者)
4.英语:Visuwords™ online graphical dictionary and thesaurus(视觉化单词间的关系 )
5.英语:Visual Dictionary Online(韦伯斯特可视化词典)
8.http://course.jingpinke.com/
